COUPLES COUNSELING SERVICES

JOURNEYS COUNSELING CENTER SPECIALIZES IN ABUSE AND TRAUMA RECOVERY. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT FOSTERING HEALING FOR THE COUPLES AND FAMILIES AFFECTED BY THESE EXPERIENCES.

The following questions may help you identify if an abuse recovery focus will be helpful for you:

  • Do you have a history of childhood abuse?

  • Is there someone in your life who is harming you sexually, physically, or emotionally?

  • Do you feel controlled?

  • Do you have to make excuses for the behavior of your spouse?

  • Do you know an abusive person who you feel would benefit from learning about their behavior?

  • Do you feel stuck in a relationship and feel there is no way out?

  • Are you confused about how abuse fits into your spiritual belief system?

  • Are you in need of a better understanding of what abuse is…or is not?

Abuse is incredibly pervasive in our culture.  We find that many of our couples initially make appointments to deal with emotional or relational symptoms in the present that are often connected to one or both partner’s past experiences of abuse or trauma.  Whether someone has experienced overt abuse (sexual, physical, or verbal) or covert abuse (emotional, financial, power, or control), it has likely impacted his/her emotional world and interactions with others.

In addition, sometimes abusive behavior is a current issue in marriage. Our highly skilled therapists can assess the situation and make appropriate referrals. Our team approach helps identify concerns in the marriage, and if abusive patterns are identified, we recommend individual therapy or group work instead of creating additional risk through couples work.

A JOURNEYS THERAPIST CAN HELP

We specialize in navigating through the complications of abuse and have seen many survivors work through their pain and find renewed hope in life.

In addition, we also work with abusive men. Several counselors at Journeys Counseling Center are well equipped to take on this challenging endeavor. Trained in domestic violence intervention, our counselors use the Duluth Model and other evidence-based therapy to help abusers acknowledge their behavior and make changes.  We are also ready to provide appropriate community referrals as needed.
