Child Counseling Services:

Adoption & Foster Care

Giving the support and nurture needed to children welcomes many changes. And we know with new changes, come new challenges. Adoption and foster care related issues can be incredibly confusing, complicated, and stressful for families. The majority of foster and adoptive parents of course want the absolute best for the children in their care, but may feel uncertain about the best ways to offer support, especially during the transition period.

The skilled professionals at Journeys Counseling Center are experienced in supporting families that are facing the common challenges of foster care and adoption. Through the process of counseling, our therapists will seek to help your child increase a sense of safety, stability, and attachment. During the step-by-step counseling process, we may help you and your child explore ways to understand your emotions, and utilize play, art, or story-telling as a means to express these emotions. In addition, we are able to walk with your child through a grieving process, allowing him/her to acknowledge and grieve losses that are associated with the unique situation of adoption. We are fully committed to helping you, as parents, understand the internal world of your child, giving you the needed tools to set healthy limits on your child’s angry or raging behaviors as well as discussing ways to find support from the community that may help you feel less alone during these trying times.

As you strive to care for your child, do you and your family identify with any of the concerns below?

  • Are you temporarily parenting a grandchild and struggling to know how to deal with the difficulties of supporting them in the midst of uncertainties?
  • Are you parenting a child that is caught in the middle of custody battles?
  • Is your child experiencing behavioral problems that you believe may be connected to their adoption?
  • Are you struggling to feel connected to your adopted child?
  • Are you fearful that what your child experienced prior to adoption may be impacting them in the present or in the future?
  • Do you feel like your adoptive child is personable with strangers but antagonistic toward you?
  • Do you feel rejected by your adopted child?

You May Have Some Questions and You Aren’t Alone…

“Will talking about things make my child feel worse? Shouldn’t they just forget about the past and focus on how great things are now?”

It can be very tempting for parents to want their child to let go of the past and enjoy the present circumstances. The ultimate goal for your adopted or foster child is that he/she will be able to integrate their past experiences into a sense of wholeness for the present and future. The reality is that these children may still be experiencing internal feelings of loss, shame, anger, or sadness that may be difficult for them to adequately express. Our trusting team of counselors will work with your child to guide them to properly expressing their feelings.

We generally recommend scheduling a specialized assessment with a trusted Journeys counselor to evaluate what your child or family’s specific needs are, as well as determining best the options for treatment and more precise answers to the questions you may have about the process. The Journeys team strives to provide you with the best fit professionally, and will happily direct you to the counselor with the best personality, expertise and approach for your family.
