Do you or your spouse find yourselves
thinking thoughts like these:
• “I’m not sure what’s wrong with us - we just don’t get along.”
• “We don’t have anything in common anymore.”
• “My partner and I are completely different - we can’t even communicate.”
• “I love my spouse, but I don’t know how to express it.”
Sometimes couples can’t quite articulate their concerns regarding their relationship, but all the signs point to a disruption in their ability to connect emotionally. Many of us have very few models of a healthy relationship or marriage and struggle to connect with our significant others in meaningful ways. During times of difficulty, we miss the mark and create distance in our relationships. During the good times, we don’t know how to foster a sustained, intimate relationship once the initial romance has faded away..
Couples Therapy can help
When distressed couples present to therapy, they are often ready to make changes. If both partners have agreed to this important step, you are well on your way toward healing. A Journeys therapist can create safety by slowing down conflict and helping you access the strengths you both have to build on an emotional connection.
But, you may still have concerns about couples therapy…
"I’m afraid that I will be embarrassed talking to a therapist with my significant other."
Therapy is designed to help you feel emotionally safe enough to take risks. When couples struggle with their emotional connection, they often have difficulty expressing their feelings and thoughts. A Journeys therapist will assist each partner in identifying their feelings, thoughts, and needs and then helping partners express these to each other. Although it is very normal to initially feel embarrassed talking about difficulties, these feelings often dissipate within the first couple of sessions.
We generally recommend scheduling an initial assessment with a Journeys counselor to evaluate what your family's specific needs are, as well as determining best options for treatment and more precise answers to the questions you may have about the process. The Journeys team strives to provide you with the perfect fit professionally, and will happily direct you to the counselor with the best personality, expertise and approach for your family.
